Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept. It’s here, and it’s already transforming how we live and work. The most common functions where AI shows up include marketing, product development and IT. In fact, the use of generative AI in marketing and sales more than doubled in 2024 alone. Tools like ChatGPT and Copilot are being embedded into workflows to speed up content creation, analyze customer data and streamline repetitive tasks.

AI’s impact on jobs: What we lose and what we gain

The growing use of AI raises understandable concerns. According to the World Economic Forum, 45% of workers fear AI could replace their jobs. There’s also a growing demand for hybrid roles that blend AI with industry expertise, such as healthcare analysts who understand AI diagnostics and marketers who can leverage generative tools.

A global shift: Regional gaps and innovation hotspots

AI isn’t spreading evenly across the world. In advanced economies, roughly 60% of jobs are exposed to AI. In contrast, emerging markets see about 40% exposure, and low-income countries, just 26%. This “AI divide” reflects gaps in infrastructure, investment and access to skilled talent.

Cities like San Francisco, New York and Beijing are leading the AI revolution. The Bay Area alone is home to over 4,000 AI companies and boasts the highest innovation score globally. New York recently overtook Beijing as the second-largest hub for AI startups, thanks to its diverse economy and access to top universities. Beijing, heavily backed by China’s national strategy, continues to lead in research output and speech and vision recognition technologies.

But it’s not just the big players. Singapore, with its “SkillsFuture” initiative, is training hundreds of thousands of citizens in digital and AI skills. Meanwhile, countries like India are ramping up national programs to democratize AI education and training.

Skills gaps and the race to reskill

Despite the surge in AI adoption, companies are struggling to find qualified workers. Red Hat reports that 81% of UK IT managers believe there’s a significant skills gap in areas like data science, large language models and AI integration. Globally, the shortfall is massive. In the U.S. alone, an estimated 700,000 AI-related positions could remain unfilled unless reskilling efforts ramp up.

What skills are in demand? Technically, roles need proficiency in data analysis, machine learning and cloud computing. But it’s not just about coding. Soft skills like analytical thinking, creativity and problem-solving are equally important. Companies are increasingly looking for people who can interpret AI outputs and apply them meaningfully in real-world scenarios.

And the gap isn’t just technical—it’s demographic, too. Only 29% of AI-skilled workers globally are women, and older workers are significantly less likely to receive AI training. Gen Z workers are more likely to be exposed to AI tools early in their careers, creating generational imbalances that inclusive upskilling programs must address.

How companies and governments are responding

Forward-thinking organizations are not just acknowledging the skills gap—they’re doing something about it. In 2018, AT&T invested US$1 billion to retrain nearly half its workforce for advanced tech roles. IKEA, after introducing an AI chatbot that handled 47% of customer inquiries, reskilled 8,500 support workers into interior design consultants, unlocking US$1.4 billion in additional revenue.

Governments are also stepping in. Singapore’s SkillsFuture gives citizens credits to pursue training in high-demand areas, including AI. France, Finland and India have launched national AI education strategies, aiming to provide accessible learning to their entire populations. Platforms like Coursera and edX have seen massive upticks in AI course enrollments, with courses like “Elements of AI” drawing millions of users worldwide.

Hiring in the AI era: Skills over experience

The job market is changing. According to LinkedIn, AI engineer and AI consultant roles are the fastest-growing in the U.S. Over the past eight years, hiring for AI roles has surged by 323%. But what’s even more interesting is that companies aren’t just looking for deep technical backgrounds anymore.

ResumeBuilder reports that 91% of hiring managers prefer candidates with experience using tools like ChatGPT, even in non-technical roles. Two-thirds of executives say they wouldn’t hire a candidate who lacks AI literacy. The internet loves the Ghibli filter, period. But is AI art crossing ethical lines?

If you’ve recently scrolled through social media, chances are you’ve seen everyday photos magically transformed into whimsical illustrations reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films. This viral trend, known as the “Ghibli filter”, has not only taken platforms by storm but also sparked a broader conversation about art, technology and creativity.

But why exactly is the “Ghibli filter” resonating so deeply, and what does it mean for the future of animation and digital artistry? Let’s explore.

Studio Ghibli: The legacy of handcrafted animation

Studio Ghibli, co-founded by legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, is renowned for its dedication to handcrafted animation. Unlike many modern animation studios that embrace computer-generated imagery (CGI), Ghibli has consistently favored traditional, hand-drawn animation techniques. This commitment is evident in Miyazaki’s iconic films like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. His films feel warm, personal and alive—qualities largely attributed to the meticulous care put into every hand-drawn frame. Hence, it doesn’t come as a surprise that seven of their films rank among the 15 highest-grossing anime films ever made.

Miyazaki himself strongly disliked CGI, famously criticizing computer-generated animation. He believed digital imagery lacked the heart and soul found in traditional animation methods. Thus, while Ghibli has occasionally experimented with CGI, such as in Earwig and the Witch (2020), Miyazaki’s personal projects have consistently avoided CGI, preserving the studio’s distinctive hand-drawn aesthetic.

A striking example is found in the 2013 film The Wind Rises, where a mere four-second crowd scene took veteran animator Eiji Yamamori approximately 15 months to complete—entirely by hand. This painstaking process shows the lengths to which Studio Ghibli goes to ensure authenticity and artistic integrity.

Miyazaki’s disdain for digital animation extends to artificial intelligence (AI) as well. In a widely circulated clip from the 2016 documentary Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki, Miyazaki reacts with visible disgust to an AI-generated animation demonstration, describing it as “an insult to life itself”. His words underscore a fundamental belief: true art requires human experience, intention and empathy—qualities that he felt AI could never genuinely replicate

The rise of AI anime art filters

The recent Ghibli filter craze is part of a larger trend of AI-powered anime filters going viral on social media over the past few years. One notable example is Meitu, a Chinese photo-editing app that introduced an AI anime avatar feature. It became a global viral hit in late 2022 and 2023, rocketing the app up the download charts and hiking the company’s stock price by about 60%.

Besides Meitu, several other platforms have also leveraged AI anime filters successfully. Apps like Prisma popularized artistic “painting” filters as early as 2016, while platforms like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram often feature anime face filters that consistently go viral.

This trend intensified significantly with OpenAI’s recent launch of the GPT-4o image generation. GPT-4o was trained on extensive datasets, including anime-style artwork, enabling it to produce convincing images on command. 

Specifically, the Ghibli AI filter produces images highly reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s style, complete with soft watercolor palettes, nostalgic backgrounds and charming character designs. Although these generated images aren’t perfect replicas, their high quality and appealing aesthetic have fueled their immense popularity on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter). 

To further demonstrate how viral the Ghibli filter is: it has brought a massive number of new users to ChatGPT, along with its usage hitting a record high.

Democratizing creativity through AI art

One undeniable benefit of AI art tools is their democratization of creative expression. Prior to these innovations, creating professional-quality visual art required extensive skill, training and resources. Now, AI art tools empower anyone with internet access to express themselves visually in styles once reserved for professional artists.

Platforms like GPT-4o and Meitu have effectively flattened traditional creative hierarchies. People who never considered themselves artists are now confidently participating in visual storytelling. Social media platforms have a big role to play in the process as well—they enable anyone’s creations to gain widespread visibility and appreciation, significantly reshaping the artistic landscape.

Ethical controversies surrounding AI-generated art

Yet, not everyone is thrilled about AI-generated art. A primary ethical concern involves how these AI models are trained. Typically, AI systems learn by analyzing vast datasets of images scraped from the internet—often without the consent of original creators. This has triggered substantial legal backlash, such as Getty Images suing Stability AI (the creator of Stable Diffusion) in 2023 for allegedly using millions of copyrighted images without permission. 

In addition to Getty’s case, artists themselves have filed class-action lawsuits (e.g., artists Andersen, McKernan and Ortiz vs. Stability AI, DeviantArt and Midjourney) on similar grounds—that their copyrighted illustrations were scraped and used to train AI models without consent or compensation.

Another concern of AI-generated art is the perpetuation of biases present in training data, which can unintentionally reinforce harmful stereotypes. Artists and critics alike argue that unchecked AI development threatens not just copyright integrity but the ethical standards and respect central to artistic expression.

Navigating the future of AI in art

As AI models continue to evolve and AI-generated art becomes more convincing, addressing ethical challenges becomes increasingly vital. Encouragingly, consumer research shows that people are willing to pay more for AI art that compensates original artists fairly.

Moreover, initiatives like Adobe’s Firefly platform emphasize responsible AI development and transparency. Newer platforms, such as Ascendant Art, are implementing royalty models to ensure artists are compensated whenever their work informs AI-generated pieces. For instance, its compensation model disburses about 25% of net profits from avatar sales back to contributing artists. 

Furthermore, Spawning AI provides creators with tools to monitor and control how their works are used in AI training datasets. This can help promote greater transparency and respect for intellectual property.

Educators also play a crucial role in this evolving landscape. The National Art Education Association (NAEA) advocates for balanced AI use in education, emphasizing ethical usage and respect for traditional artistic skills. Educators can help foster critical awareness and responsible creativity by teaching students about the broader implications of AI-generated art.

Meet the pricey new hires from OpenAI.

OpenAI is developing advanced “AI agents” specifically designed for enterprise use. These powerful, autonomous AI assistants can independently handle complex professional tasks with minimal human oversight. Essentially, they will be acting as specialized AI employees.

However, unlike the standard ChatGPT (available for US$20/month or the US$200/month ChatGPT Pro), these ultra-premium agents will carry price tags ranging from US$2,000 to as much as US$20,000 per month. In this article, we’ll explore what these AI agents can do, who they’re intended for and why they are so expensive.

What are OpenAI’s AI agents?

According to a report from The Information, OpenAI is planning to launch three tiers of AI agents for different professional use cases. They are not publicly available yet, but this move reflects OpenAI’s strategy to market AI workforce solutions to professionals and enterprises. In discussions with investors about its roadmap, OpenAI indicated that it envisions its AI agent offerings to bring in 20% to 25% of its total revenue in the future. Here’s a closer look at the three tiers of AI agents that OpenAI will be launching:

Knowledge Worker Agent: US$2,000/month

The Knowledge Worker Agent is tailored for professionals who engage in intensive data handling, reporting and project management. Industries such as finance, consulting and legal services will find this agent invaluable, as it automates routine yet time-consuming tasks like data summarization, market analysis and document reviews. By managing these repetitive tasks, the agent allows skilled professionals to focus their valuable time on strategic and creative decisions.

Developer Agent: US$10,000/month

This agent is specifically designed for software development teams. It autonomously writes, debugs and optimizes code, as well as manages comprehensive software projects, aiming to boost developers’ productivity. For technology companies and IT departments, this tool presents an opportunity to reduce development timelines and operational efforts.

Research Agent: US$20,000/month

At the highest tier, the Research Agent provides advanced analytical capabilities akin to “PhD-level” skills. This agent is made for academic institutions, research laboratories and corporate R&D departments. It can autonomously perform extensive literature reviews, data synthesis and hypothesis testing, as well as generate detailed research reports and publications. Industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotech and advanced academic research stand to benefit enormously from this agent’s capabilities.

OpenAI’s existing experience with Agentic AI: Operator

OpenAI has already begun exploring agentic AI through the introduction of its Operator agent in January of this year. Operator is an AI assistant capable of autonomously navigating the web, carrying out tasks typically performed by humans. It can navigate websites, click buttons, fill out forms, scroll pages and input text—all without human intervention.

The underlying technology driving Operator is OpenAI’s Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model. Practically speaking, the CUA model allows the AI to visually assess webpage states (via screenshots) and perform interactions using virtual mouse and keyboard inputs.

With subscriptions ranging from US$2,000 to US$20,000 per month, OpenAI’s new AI agents are a lot more expensive than its current offerings. Several key factors might contribute to these premium prices:

Massive compute, infrastructure and R&D costs

Running cutting-edge AI models (like GPT-4 and beyond) is extremely resource-intensive. OpenAI reportedly spent around US$5 billion in 2024 to operate and improve its AI systems. Projections even suggest that annual computing expenses could reach US$37.5 billion by 2029 as AI usage scales​.

An AI grandma is here to scam the scammers.

Imagine this: your phone rings, and on the other end is a friendly voice claiming to be from your bank, warning you of a suspicious transaction. Panic sets in as they coax personal details out of you. By the time you realize it is a scam, the damage is done. 

Phone scammers are a persistent nuisance that plagues individuals and businesses alike, costing them time, money and peace of mind. The dangers extend far beyond mere annoyance: scams can devastate lives, especially when fraudsters prey on the elderly or vulnerable. Adding to the frustration is the helplessness many feel when faced with these schemes—it often seems like there’s nothing you can do to fight back. But what if you could turn the tables on scammers and waste their time instead of yours? Enter Daisy AI, the AI Grandma developed by British telecommunication company Virgin Media O2 in partnership with well-known scam baiter and YouTuber Jim Browning.

Launched in November 2024, Daisy AI is a clever and innovative response to the phone scam epidemic. Designed to interact with fraudsters and keep them occupied for as long as possible, Daisy mimics the persona of a tech-illiterate grandmother. It is equipped with advanced AI, engaging scammers in rambling conversations, peppered with anecdotes about knitting, family and other harmless distractions. By the time the scammer realizes they’ve been speaking to an AI, precious minutes—sometimes up to 40—have already been wasted.

How Daisy AI works

Daisy uses sophisticated technology to simulate real-time conversations with a believable grandmotherly voice. In fact, Daisy’s voice was modeled after the grandmother of a staff member from VCCP Faith, O2’s partnered media agency.

Here’s how it works: Scammers call a designated number that O2’s anti-fraud team has added to contact lists used by fraudsters. Daisy then uses AI to process the incoming voice, transcribe it into text, generate an appropriate response using a custom large language model (LLM) and convert that response back into speech. This seamless process ensures that scammers are none the wiser.

Beyond its ability to converse, Daisy is specifically designed to mimic a grandmother: she would feign confusion and share fabricated details like made-up bank information to present itself as an easy target. This keeps scammers hooked and disrupts their workflow, reducing the time and energy they can spend targeting real victims.

Operating independently, Daisy requires no human intervention once a call begins. As a digital solution, it can handle multiple calls simultaneously, operating around the clock without fatigue. Two weeks after its launch, this AI grandma has engaged in over 1,000 conversations to sideline fraudsters.

Why Virgin Media O2 developed Daisy AI

Virgin Media O2 created Daisy as part of its ongoing commitment to safeguarding its customers from scams. For context, the United Kingdom has the highest fraud call rate in Europe, at 9.3%. A survey conducted by O2 revealed that almost 70% of people reported being targeted by scammers and 20% of respondents experienced a fraud attempt every week. The rise of phone fraud has made it increasingly important to adopt proactive measures, and Daisy represents an innovative way to combat this issue. 

Unlike traditional approaches—such as blocking suspicious numbers or issuing consumer warnings—Daisy flips the script. It wastes scammers’ resources, thereby reducing their operational capacity. Beyond this, Daisy also serves an educational purpose by showcasing common tactics used by fraudsters, helping to foster greater public awareness and vigilance.

Limitations of Daisy AI

Despite its ingenuity, Daisy AI is not without its limitations. Currently, Daisy operates on a restricted scale, answering only a fraction of the vast number of potential fraudulent calls. Without a mechanism for customers to directly forward scam calls to the AI, its ability to deter scammers on a large scale is reduced. This limits its effectiveness to more of a speed bump rather than a comprehensive solution.

Another challenge lies in scalability. Effectively countering the widespread issue of phone scams would require deploying a large number of AI entities like Daisy. As noted by Julian Hayes, a partner at BCL Solicitors, a “legion of them” would be necessary to make a significant dent in the mobile fraud ecosystem. This raises questions about the scalability of such solutions and the resources required to maintain them.

There’s also the possibility that scammers may eventually recognize and adapt to Daisy’s tactics. As fraudsters become aware of such AI interventions, they might develop methods to identify and avoid prolonged interactions. This could limit the AI’s long-term effectiveness.

Finally, the use of AI to engage in deceptive interactions, even against malicious actors like scammers, also raises ethical and legal considerations. Employing AI-generated personas to mislead individuals, regardless of their intent, could set precedents that may be misapplied in other contexts. Additionally, the legality of recording and using conversations without explicit consent varies across jurisdictions, potentially exposing organizations to legal risks.

A step in the right direction

Daisy AI is a shining example of how technology can creatively address modern problems. By flipping the script on scammers, Virgin Media O2 has not only provided a protective shield for its customers but also dealt a blow to fraudsters’ operations. Given the growth of phone scams and the difficulty in cracking down on them—particularly when many operate from overseas—innovative tech solutions like Daisy are a step in the right direction.

While Daisy isn’t a perfect solution—and certainly not the only one needed to combat scams—it represents an important step forward. As scammers continue to adapt, tools like Daisy remind us that innovation and vigilance remain our best defenses. You can control the device through voice commands, touch gestures on the frame or an accompanying smart ring that doubles as a trackpad.

Another standout feature of the Halliday Glasses is its near-eye display “DigiWindow”. While conventional smart glasses display information directly onto the lens, the “DigiWindow” projects a virtual 3.5-inch screen into the user’s field of view from the upper right of the frame. It can work with the AI assistant to project texts like conversation summaries, messages and notes discreetly. And don’t worry—it’s only visible to you.

The glasses weigh just 35 grams—comparable to regular glasses—and support prescription lenses. With 12 hours of battery life on a single charge, Halliday Glasses are set to ship in March 2025, priced between US$399 and US$499. 

2. Samsung S95F OLED TV

Also introduced at CES 2025, Samsung’s S95F OLED TV is a highly anticipated smart TV from the South Korean electronics giant. This flagship model builds on its predecessor, the S95D, with several upgrades in its AI capabilities and display technology.

The S95F’s “Vision AI” suite takes smart entertainment to the next level. Besides standard AI features like AI Upscaling, Adaptive Sound Pro an​​d Auto HDR Remastering, the smart TV is also offering new functions like:

  • Click-to-Search: Identify on-screen elements like actors or filming locations.
  • Samsung Food: Recognize on-screen dishes and access related recipes.
  • Live Translate: Translate closed captions during live broadcasts into seven languages.

All these AI features can be prompted with a click of a dedicated AI button on the remote. 

Beyond entertainment, the S95F steps into the realm of smart home security. Using AI, it can analyze video feeds from connected cameras and detect unusual movements or sounds. It can even alert you about potential threats, like break-ins or falls, directly to your device.

On the hardware side, the S95F boasts a peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits—30% higher than the S95D—and a 165Hz refresh rate, catering to both home entertainment enthusiasts and PC gamers. Moreover, it features advanced anti-glare screen technology to ensure vivid visuals in any lighting condition. 

Expected to release in late February or March 2025, pricing details are under wraps. For context, the S95D’s models ranged from US$2,599 to US$4,699. 

3. The Friend medallion

What if your AI could be more than a tool—what if it could be a companion? Enter the Friend Medallion, an AI-powered pendant designed to provide constant companionship through engaging conversations and support. Inspired by creator Avi Schiffmann’s experiences of loneliness during solo travels, the medallion is a unique wearable.

Encased in a circular, silicone-like shell, the pendant’s AI is powered by Anthropic AI’s Claude 3.5. Users can interact with it by pressing and holding the medallion, which then sends context-aware text responses to their paired smartphone. It also features an “always-listening” mode, picking up environmental cues like conversations and sounds to initiate interactions unprompted.

While the device is always listening, the developers emphasize that all the data is end-to-end encrypted, with no audio or transcripts stored beyond its immediate use. Moreover, users can delete the AI’s memories with a single tap in the app, ensuring full control over their data.

The Friend is only compatible with iOS for now, but plans for Android support are in the works. Priced at US$99 with no subscription fees, the medallion is available for pre-order and will begin shipping in early 2025. For now, it’s exclusive to the U.S. and Canada.

4. Withings OMNIA smart mirror

The Withings OMNIA is a conceptual smart mirror introduced at CES 2025, aiming to transform reflections into a comprehensive personal wellness dashboard. This AI-powered interactive mirror can gather data from other Withings devices, including smartwatches, scales and sleep trackers, to offer a holistic health overview. 

Users can stand on the base of the OMNIA—which is a scale—to get a 360-degree body scan and measure their weight, heart rate, blood pressure and metabolic health. The smart mirror can even run electrocardiogram (ECG) scans to identify signs of atrial fibrillation. 

Based on the collected data, its built-in AI voice assistant—dubbed the “AI Vocal Companion”—can provide real-time feedback and offer advice to help users maintain or improve their health. Users can ask health-related questions for instant answers, schedule telehealth consultations and even share their data with doctors with OMNIA.

Though still in development, the OMNIA has already sparked considerable buzz. Pricing and release dates are yet to be announced, but it holds the potential to redefine health tracking at home.

5. The Nuwa pen

Smart pens aren’t new, but the Nuwa Pen is a game-changer. Unlike other pens that require special paper or a notebook, the Nuwa Pen works on any paper. Write on any paper, and this AI-powered pen digitizes your notes instantly, syncing them to the Nuwa+ app.

Equipped with motion sensors, AI algorithms and the patent-pending TRIDENT camera system (featuring three miniature cameras), the pen accurately captures handwriting. Once uploaded to the app, handwritten notes can be converted into searchable, editable formats. Its “Augmented Notes” feature takes things further by recognizing to-do lists, calendar invites and phone numbers, syncing them with relevant apps like Google Drive or Todoist. The developers are also looking to add new capabilities, like solving math equations and writing musical compositions, within the app.

The pen’s ergonomic design ensures comfort, while a single charge provides two hours of continuous writing. The charging case offers five full recharges, with each session taking only 15 minutes. Set to launch in 2025 at US$295, the Nuwa Pen is currently available for pre-order, with public beta shipping expected by February 2025.

The gaming world evolves as AI takes the joystick—but it hasn’t won players’ hearts yet.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has long been a cornerstone of gaming, enhancing player experiences through smarter non-player characters (NPCs), procedural content generation and dynamic storytelling. From the simple yet groundbreaking AI-driven enemies in Pac-Man (1980) to the complex NPC behaviors in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, AI has consistently pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in interactive entertainment. But now, the gaming industry may have reached its boldest milestone yet.

Traditionally, AI in gaming focused on creating immersive interactions and game worlds. However, the recent debut of an entirely AI-generated game, Oasis, has sparked a monumental shift. This article takes a closer look at Oasis, its development journey and the mixed public reception it has garnered.

What is Oasis?

Released on October 31, 2024, Oasis is the first game to be entirely AI-generated. It’s the brainchild of a collaboration between Decart, an Israeli AI company founded by Dean Leitersdorf, and Etched, a Silicon Valley hardware startup co-founded by Robert Wachen. The partnership began in 2022, driven by a shared interest in AI technologies like OpenAI’s GPT-3 and their potential to transform game development by generating environments and mechanics without traditional coding. Backed by a US$21 million investment from prominent names such as Oren Zeev and Sequoia Capital, the project was ambitious from the outset.

What makes Oasis special is its use of “next-frame prediction” AI technology to anticipate player actions in real time. Instead of relying on a traditional game engine, the game’s transformer-based AI model was trained on millions of hours of Minecraft gameplay footage. According to official data, this allows Oasis to generate one frame in just 0.04 seconds—a significant leap compared to other AI models, which can take up to 20 seconds to generate a single second of video. This results in a fluid and dynamic sandbox experience that can adapt to players’ actions. Developers believe this capability will only improve with hardware advancements, such as Etched’s upcoming Sohu AI chip.

The public reception of Oasis

While the demo launch of Oasis has certainly turned heads for its innovative approach, it was met with mixed reviews. On the positive side, the game has been praised for its ambitious concept and its potential to redefine how games are developed and played. The AI’s ability to generate responsive, real-time environments has sparked conversations about the possibilities of fully AI-driven game worlds among players and industry professionals.

For instance, Oasis is capped at 720p resolution and runs at a modest 20 frames per second, both of which feel outdated compared to modern gaming standards. These issues have left some players feeling underwhelmed by the otherwise impressive technology.

Beyond the technical limitations, there’s also the matter of Oasis’s eerie unpredictability. Some players have described the game’s constant changes in scenery and inventory as unsettling, even calling it “a nightmarish hallucination”. These elements show how powerful generative AI can be, but they also show how it can create experiences that are too unpredictable for comfort.

The plagiarism controversy

Another contentious aspect of Oasis is its resemblance to Minecraft. Critics argue that Oasis is essentially a clone, with no credit given to Mojang or Microsoft, the creators of the 2011 classic. Decart and Etched did not obtain permission to use Minecraft gameplay data to train their AI model, raising questions about copyright infringement and ethical boundaries in AI-driven game development. This controversy has sparked debates about how generative AI intersects with intellectual property laws, creating a gray area that the industry has yet to address.

The future of generative AI in gaming

Despite its flaws, Oasis represents a bold leap forward for AI in gaming. Industry experts believe that generative AI can streamline game development by automating repetitive tasks, ultimately reducing production costs and timelines. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has even predicted that within five to eight years, “every pixel [will be] generated at real-time frame rates”.

But with this technological revolution come valid concerns. Will AI replace game developers entirely? According to experts, the future lies in striking a balance. John Romero, co-creator of DOOM, has said, “AI is best used as a tool to complement human creativity, not to replace it.” Similarly, Herman Hulst, co-CEO of PlayStation, emphasizes the importance of maintaining the “human touch” in game development.

As the industry navigates these challenges, Oasis stands as both a milestone and a harbinger of things to come. It blurs the line between human and AI creativity, offering a fascinating glimpse into a new era of interactive entertainment. While the road ahead may be uncertain, one thing is clear: the journey of AI in gaming is just getting started.

October saw the company reporting a 54% year-on-year profit increase, thanks to strong demand for AI chips. To enhance supply chain resilience and meet regional demands, TSMC has been expanding globally. Its new Arizona facility in the U.S. will produce Blackwell AI chips, while its first Japanese fab in Kumamoto began operations in February. Additionally, TSMC is investing US$3.7 billion in a European facility in Dresden, Germany, marking its first-ever expansion into Europe.

4. ASML (Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography)

There’s a lot happening in Paris this year. From hosting the 2024 Olympics to its iconic Paris Fashion Week, AI and tech innovation have been central to these global events. Typically held twice a year—the Fall/Winter and the Spring/Summer editions—this quintessential fashion event offers the world a sneak peek into the latest designer couture.  

Once again, this year’s Paris Fashion Week has successfully captured the world’s attention, proving that today’s runway is more than just a showcase for designer couture—it’s a playground for technological innovations. In this article, let’s take a closer look at how advanced technology like AI played a major role at the 2024 Paris Fashion Week.

On September 23, 2024, the first day of Spring/Summer Paris Fashion Week 2025, Clothes For Contemporary Life (CFCL), a Japanese brand founded by Yusuke Takahashi, made headlines for its 3D-printed knitted dresses

Here’s how Takahashi creates these dresses using 3D printing technology: First, he draws his designs digitally on a tablet, which are then turned into machine-readable data by factory programmers. This data informs a computer-driven knitting machine—doubling as a 3D printer—that knits the garments one at a time. 

This tech-infused production process is not only innovative but also eco-friendly. Since the garments are printed as whole pieces, they require no cutting or sewing, generating little to no waste. Additionally, the use of recycled polyester in the yarns adds another layer of environmental consciousness.

FabriX, a Hong Kong government-powered digital fashion project launched in 2022, returned to the Spring/Summer edition of Paris Fashion Week 2025 to unveil its newly upgraded virtual try-on kiosk. At this kiosk, attendees explored a range of digital fashion creations from six distinguished designer brands.

Shaped like a Tamagotchi, the latest model, the 2.0.1 edition, is a collaboration with digital identification solutions provider Avery Dennison, digital fashion commerce infrastructure provider Genesis-One and augmented reality and AI specialist ZERO10. At the FabriX kiosk, visitors had the opportunity to try on digital fashion items, take pictures with the outfits and even pre-order them on the spot. Some of the items were exclusively made for Roblox avatars.

Since launching at London and Paris Fashion Week 2023, FabriX has been bringing local fashion talent to the global stage. The project supports designers from the drawing board to the digital runway, helping transform their sketches into 3D models ready for virtual try-ons. Additionally, FabriX works with designers in listing their products on a global fashion marketplace, making it easier for them to reach a broader audience. 

The curator of FabriX, Declan Chan shares the vision behind the project, “[FabriX] enables us to promote fashion without being bound by the limitation of logistics. And since it doesn’t require physical samples [from] the designers, it allows us to work with global talents and content creators to create various innovative digital assets to promote the designers’ work.”

3. AI-powered immersive fashion runway by Balenciaga

During the Fall/Winter edition of Paris Fashion Week in March 2024, Balenciaga offered an extraordinary experience. The runway was transformed into an immersive digital realm, with walls and ceilings covered in screens displaying AI-generated images and videos of various landscapes—from the icy expanses of Iceland and Greenland to the vast deserts of the Sahara. At the same time, images of flowers kept on regenerating using AI. This immersive setup let audiences feel as if the fashion models were stepping right out of these exotic locations. 

Exploring the concept of “good taste vs. bad taste”, this captivating visual experience was made possible thanks to a collaboration between American design studio COUR, New York-based creative studio Good Company and Berlin-based art studio Sub.  As the show progressed, the digital backdrop gradually transformed into an infinite Instagram feed, eventually dissolving into static white noise. This transition from the beauty of nature to chaotic visuals symbolized the contrast between good taste and a dystopian view of beauty. 

The future of fashion at Paris Fashion Week 

Fashion is always a playground and runway for technology, as demonstrated by this year’s Paris Fashion Week. This year’s events show us how AI and 3D printing technologies are not just enhancing the design and production processes but are also reshaping how we experience and interact with fashion. 

From CFCL’s 3D-printed garments that minimize waste to FabriX’s virtual try-on kiosks and Balenciaga’s immersive digital runways, these innovations offer a glimpse into a future where technology continues to enrich fashion, making it more sustainable, interactive and personalized.

AI is at the ballot box—is Grok-2’s unchecked freedom tilting the scales of democracy?

This year, social media platforms have been in the spotlight, though often for the wrong reasons. From Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s public apology during a Senate hearing to the arrest of Telegram’s founder, not to mention the dangerous food trends circulating social media and Instagram’s launch of “Teen Accounts” for better safety, the controversies keep coming. 

Similarly, X’s (formerly Twitter) AI chatbot, Grok, has been stirring up trouble since its debut in November 2023. The uproar only grew with the release of its latest model, Grok-2, in August this year, due to its little hesitation in making offensive and legally dubious images.

While legal experts and civil rights advocates view Grok as problematic and reckless, Musk sees the images produced by its AI model as merely entertaining, suggesting the tool allows people “to have some fun”. 

However, the potential consequences of Grok-2 stretch beyond mere “fun”, especially when the U.S. presidential elections are ahead of us. The lack of regulation surrounding such AI tools can significantly influence the landscape of the upcoming U.S. presidential campaign, particularly regarding the dissemination of election-related information and the generation of political imagery. 

In this article, we’ll explore why Grok-2 could be problematic and the negative impacts it has left on the upcoming election.

Pulling no punches in creating controversial images

Grok-2 has not held back in generating controversial images since its launch, and these images have rapidly spread across social media. This type of content can distort public perception and damage reputations, a serious issue when paired with the AI’s owner, who often criticizes what he sees as excessive censorship on digital platforms.

Elon Musk, CEO of X and the creator of Grok, is openly pro-Trump—he formed a political action committee supporting Trump and the Republicans. In early September 2024, Musk posted an AI-created image depicting Vice President Kamala Harris wearing a hat with a communist emblem, misleadingly suggesting her policies align with communism. This image appears to perpetuate Trump’s skewed portrayal of Harris’s policies and was criticized for being misleading and biased.

That’s just one instance. Grok users have crafted various provocative images, such as former President Barack Obama allegedly using cocaine, former President Donald Trump sharing a kiss with Elon Musk and Vice President Kamala Harris giving a thumbs up from a pilot’s cockpit, evoking the events of 9/11.

In September 2024, filmmakers known as “The Dor Brothers” (@thedorbrothers) used Grok to create a viral video of notable politicians like Trump, Harris and Obama engaging in a fictional grocery store heist. 

The ease of creating these deepfakes—deceptive images and videos designed to spread false information—highlights a troubling trend in the digital age. In light of this, researchers from a UK-based Center for Countering Digital Hate have discovered that Grok-2 repeatedly failed to reject prompts for misleading images related to the 2024 U.S. presidential elections. Moreover, it even produces images in response to racist and homophobic prompts. Out of 20 such attempts, Grok generated 16 offensive images.

Of course, politicians aren’t the only targets. Grok has been used to depict singer Taylor Swift in a plane flying toward the Twin Towers. Even copyrighted characters are vulnerable to being misrepresented; in a now-deleted post, X user Christian Montessori (@chrmontessori) revealed he exploited a loophole in Grok’s programming to create images of Mickey Mouse holding a gun and attacking children. 

So, why does Grok-2 seem to have no boundary? 

Well, because it’s designed so. Unlike competitors like ChatGPT and Gemini, Grok-2 operates with fewer restrictions to allow for more creative freedom—not a surprise given Musk’s stance on social media being overly silencing. 

Worse still, TechCrunch reports uncertainty regarding whether Grok-2’s images carry metadata to show they’re AI-generated. In contrast, platforms like OpenAI clearly watermark their images to signal AI involvement. The lack of such markers on Grok-2’s images could easily mislead users.

To give you a bit more context, Grok-2 uses an open-source text-to-image generation model called FLUX.1, developed by German AI startup Black Forest Labs. The model is known for its accurate depiction of human hands and legs—a tricky feat for most AI models. This advanced capability makes the images Grok-2 produces quite believable, effectively blurring the lines between parody and misinformation. The ease of image generation and distribution could confuse voters, muddling their ability to discern real news from manipulation.

With a social media mogul who’s “passionate” about restoring freedom of speech, an AI chatbot with scant restrictions and an AI image generator capable of generating realistic human images, Grok-2 smells like a recipe for spreading propaganda and biases on a massive scale. 

Spinning a yarn and spreading election misinformation 

And it’s not just creating controversial images. Grok-2 has also been in the hot seat for disseminating inaccurate election information, which has led state officials to call for corrective actions.

Just hours after former President Joe Biden bowed out of the election race, a Grok post erroneously claimed, “The ballot deadline has passed for several states for the 2024 election.” This claim quickly spread across numerous social media platforms, causing considerable confusion as the election loomed. State officials were understandably worried; such misinformation could seriously mess with the electoral process.

Faced with this issue, five state secretaries urged Elon Musk to get Grok under control, suggesting he should follow OpenAI’s lead. OpenAI had previously partnered with the National Association of Secretaries of State to distribute accurate election information through CanIVote.org. Although X was initially reluctant to form a similar partnership, it eventually made moves to steer users towards Vote.gov, a reliable source for election information.

Accountability in AI-generated imagery: Who holds the keys?

It’s quite telling when Elon Musk, the head of X and its AI image generator, finds amusement in the controversial images produced by Grok-2. Clearly, there are significant responsibilities that both government officials and online platform users need to shoulder. 

Currently, there are no federal laws specifically regulating AI-generated content in political advertising. However, lawmakers are actively pushing for measures to curb Grok’s influence on election misinformation and deepfakes. On August 27, a group of Democratic lawmakers called on the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to set guidelines for AI-generated content in political campaigns, pointing out Grok-2’s potential to spread misleading narratives. Meanwhile, the European Union is probing Grok-2 for possibly breaching the EU’s Digital Safety Act.

Despite these efforts, the impact of government regulations and social media platform policies can only go so far. Ultimately, it falls to social media users to take responsibility for the content they create and engage with—especially as the role of generative AI in our everyday lives shows no signs of diminishing.

This release, which includes the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 9 Pro XL, is Google’s bid to carve out a significant market share in the fiercely competitive smartphone arena. Let’s take a closer look at what the Pixel 9 offers and how it measures up to its rivals.

AI

AI is a major selling point for the Pixel 9, which comes packed with smart features designed to enhance user experiences. These capabilities, especially in photo editing and content creation, are yet unmatched by competitors. Here are some standout AI features:

  • Gemini: This built-in AI assistant is integrated across various Google apps for seamless functionality. 
  • Gemini Live: For subscribers of Gemini Advanced (US$20/month), this feature provides a chatbot capable of real-time, conversational interactions, helping users brainstorm ideas or plan tasks.
  • Photography enhancements
    • Add Me: Using augmented reality (AR), this tool lets users insert themselves into group photos by combining two separate images taken at different times.
    • Magic Editor: Users can reimagine their photos by adding or modifying elements using generative AI. This includes changing backgrounds or adding objects based on text prompts.
    • Auto Frame: This tool helps adjust the composition of photos after they are taken, ensuring better framing and focus on subjects.
  • Pixel Screenshots: An app that allows users to search and manage their captures more effectively, with AI assisting in finding specific information within them.
  • Call Notes: After a call, the Pixel 9 can generate summaries to help users recall important details.
  • Multimodal interaction: Powered by the Tensor G4 chip, the Pixel 9 supports multimodal AI capabilities. Users can communicate with the Gemini using text, images or voice prompts for a more intuitive experience.
  • Pixel Studio: An image generator that creates images from text prompts. Users can also edit the generated visuals by altering prompts to add or remove elements, change styles or apply stickers.

Camera

The Google Pixel 9 features an impressive camera lineup: a 50 MP Wide Dual Rear Camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera and a 1.5MP dual selfie camera. The rear camera is equipped to capture detailed images, thanks to an Octa PD sensor, an 82° field of view and an f/1.68 aperture. The ultra-wide lens has been upgraded to capture 110% more light than previous Pixel models and can focus on objects as close as two centimeters. The Super Res Zoom, allowing up to 8X magnification, lets you zoom in and out with little detail loss. Additionally, the front camera supports autofocus and has a 95° ultra-wide field of view for clear selfies. 

Reviews have praised the camera’s performance, highlighting its ability to take high-quality photographs in both well-lit and low-light conditions, perfect for everything from daytime outings to night sight and astrophotography adventures. 

However, the Pixel 9 lacks a telephoto lens and relies on digital zoom. This means it doesn’t quite match the optical zoom capabilities of some competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S24 and iPhone 15 and 16, which could be a consideration for photography enthusiasts.

Design and ergonomics

Users report that the Google Pixel 9, with its flat back and sleek aluminum frame, feels reminiscent of holding an iPhone 15. Its edges are now angular instead of curved as in the previous models—a change that hasn’t pleased everyone. That said, many find that this design offers an easy grip and facilitates one-handed operation, making it a particularly user-friendly option for on-the-go users.

However, at about 198 grams, the Pixel 9 is on the heavier side—slightly more so than the Galaxy S24 at 168 grams and the iPhone 16 at 179 grams. This extra weight might lead to some discomfort during extended use. As for its aesthetic appeal, the Pixel 9 comes in a variety of attractive colors: Peony (pink), Porcelain  (white), Wintergreen (mint green), and Obsidian (black).

Display 

The Pixel 9 boasts a 6.3-inch Actua OLED display with a resolution of 2,424 × 1,080 pixels, yielding a pixel density of 422 ppi. What really sets it apart is its peak brightness of 2,700 nits, a significant step up from the Pixel 8’s 2,000 nits. This makes the Pixel 9 brighter than both the Galaxy S24, which reaches 1,800 nits, and the iPhone 16 at 2,000 nits. Such high brightness greatly enhances visibility in outdoor settings and improves the overall usability under bright light conditions.

Additionally, the display offers an adaptive refresh rate that varies between 60-120Hz for the standard models and even stretches from 1-120Hz for the Pro versions. This feature puts it on par with the Galaxy S24 series. In contrast, the standard Apple iPhone 16 models are limited to a less smooth 60Hz refresh rate, making the Pixel’s display more fluid in comparison.

Battery performance

The Pixel 9 comes with a 4,700 mAh battery, a notable upgrade from earlier models and slightly outperforming the Galaxy S24 (4,000 mAh) and iPhone 16 Pro Max (4,676 mAh). Users have reported that the device lasted 13 hours and 18 minutes during continuous web browsing tests. It also supports fast charging up to 27W and takes about 30 minutes to achieve 55% charge.

It’s worth noting that, like competing smartphones, the Pixel 9 does not come with a charger in the box but only charging cables. Additionally, some reviews have pointed out that the phone struggles with heavy tasks such as gaming, outdoor photography and prolonged video viewing and tends to heat up during these activities.

Software 

The Google Pixel 9 runs on Android 14 and promises seven years of security and OS upgrades. While Samsung also commits to similar terms, competitors like Apple, OnePlus, Xiaomi and other Android manufacturers offer much shorter support durations.  This commitment to extended support means users can count on their phone to stay reliable and feature-rich throughout its lifespan.

Under the hood, the Pixel 9 is powered by Google’s latest Tensor G4 chip, which is tailor-made to efficiently handle AI-related tasks. It also boasts 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, ensuring that multitasking is smooth and that even the most demanding apps run effortlessly.

The verdict

The Google Pixel 9 presents itself as a versatile smartphone that excels in performance, camera capabilities and user-friendly software. Its commitment to seven years of software support is a major advantage for those seeking a durable and reliable device. 

While its bundle of AI features is another highlight, not everyone is a fan—some critics argue that it’s “too much AI”, finding features like the AI-powered weather summary to be unnecessary. Additionally, the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens could be a drawback for photography enthusiasts. Nonetheless, the Pixel 9 offers a compelling package for most users, striking a good balance between innovation and practicality.
