The partnership combines AWS’s cloud technology and Owkin’s AI expertise to drive precision medicine and drug discovery.
Owkin, a TechBio company blending human and artificial intelligence (AI) to advance personalized medicine, has announced a collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to revolutionize the fields of drug discovery, clinical trials acceleration and the development of AI-driven diagnostics. This partnership is set to leverage AWS’s extensive global infrastructure and cloud capabilities to enhance Owkin’s data handling, optimize operational efficiency and propel precision medicine research.
“Owkin was founded with the belief that the future of precision medicine is in technologies that are able to unlock insights from the vast amount of patient data in hospitals and research centers in a privacy-preserving and secure way,” shared Thomas Clozel, the CEO of Owkin. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and expressed excitement about teaming up with AWS to harness the cloud’s power and flexibility for research initiatives.
Innovating biotechnology with AI and cloud computing
The collaboration focuses on pushing the envelope in biotechnological innovation by utilizing AWS’s high-performance computing, machine learning tools and scalable cloud infrastructure. This synergy will enable Owkin to fulfill its substantial data storage requirements, craft generative AI applications and refine foundational models.
With tools like Amazon SageMaker, Owkin plans to develop, train and deploy machine learning models more efficiently, process high-quality data at scale and enhance the delivery of its AI solutions to research partners, pathology laboratories and the biopharmaceutical industry. The ultimate goal is to improve patient health outcomes through these innovative approaches.
Leveraging expertise for precision medicine
Both Owkin and AWS will pool their expertise—Owkin’s in biotech research and development and AWS’s Healthcare and Life Sciences team’s experience in various health sectors—to tackle the critical challenges in precision medicine and tailor treatments to individual patients.
Dan Sheeran, General Manager of Healthcare and Life Sciences at AWS, highlighted the transformative potential of cloud technology and generative AI in accelerating healthcare innovation. “We are excited to support Owkin in their journey to lower costs and discover and develop better, more targeted treatments faster with flexible, secure and scalable infrastructure and fit for purpose generative AI tools,” he added.
Advanced infrastructure for cutting-edge research
Owkin will utilize AWS’s robust infrastructure for deploying its applications, including the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) UltraClusters equipped with NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs, to access supercomputing capabilities on demand. This setup is designed to significantly reduce the time required for training machine learning models.
Furthermore, Owkin plans to explore AWS’s specialized cloud-oriented chips, like AWS Trainium for machine learning acceleration and AWS Graviton for general-purpose computing, aiming for optimal performance and cost-efficiency across various workloads.
Commitment to data sovereignty and security
Emphasizing data sovereignty, Owkin will benefit from AWS’s Digital Sovereignty Pledge, ensuring complete control over their data with stringent sovereignty controls, including encryption and data residency guardrails. This will facilitate secure partnerships and high-quality data collaboration while adhering to comprehensive compliance controls and standards, supporting global regulatory requirements.
