Walmart Pledges US$1 Million to Aid Valparaiso Fire Victims

Comprehensive relief efforts and community support initiatives were launched in the wake of devastating fires.

In the aftermath of severe fires that ravaged four municipalities in the Valparaiso region in early February, causing extensive damage to over 7,000 houses and affecting upwards of 4,000 individuals, the Walmart Foundation alongside Walmart Chile has stepped forward with a commitment to aid in recovery efforts. The conglomerate has pledged a substantial social investment of US$1 million to support the victims of this calamity.

This financial commitment is earmarked for various initiatives aimed at alleviating the impact of the disaster. The funds will support nonprofit organizations engaged in a range of activities. These include the rehabilitation of public spaces, restoration of children’s facilities, reforestation projects and assistance to local entrepreneurs who have suffered economic losses due to the fires, with a particular focus on supporting women in the region.

Walmart Chile, which operates a network of 51 stores under brands such as Lider, Express de Lider, SuperBodega aCuenta and Central Mayorista, and employs over 4,860 associates in the Valparaiso region, has been proactive in responding to the needs of affected families, especially those of its employees. The company’s response includes financial aid through solidarity funds and emergency credit facilities. Internally, Walmart Chile initiated a fundraising campaign, promising to match the contributions of its workers. Additionally, the company has provided access to free telemedicine and mental health services and organized recreational activities for the children of its employees.

Speaking on behalf of Walmart Chile, CEO Cristián Barrientos emphasized the region’s importance to the company and expressed solidarity with affected families. “This donation is the product of a great effort by the Walmart Foundation, Walmart Chile and our entire team to bring hope to affected families,” Barrientos said.

The efforts to assist those impacted by the fires were highlighted during an event at a Walmart supermarket in Viña del Mar. The event saw the participation of notable figures including the Minister of Finance Mario Marcel and Viña del Mar’s mayor, Macarena Ripamonti, along with Walmart associates and customers. Marcel underscored the gravity of the situation, noting the substantial increase in the number of homes destroyed compared to initial estimates and the need for a concerted effort to rebuild the affected communities.

“I want to thank Walmart Chile and the Walmart Foundation for this commitment of $1 million dollars that has just been announced, because it reflects the effort to support the neighbors who were affected by these fires,” Marcel remarked.

To further support the relief efforts, Walmart Chile has also been actively donating essential items including food, diapers, clothing and more through various government and local agencies. The company’s early response included donations to the National Fire Department Board and local enterprises, as well as support for social organizations in Viña del Mar with food hampers and tents for those left homeless. Additionally, Walmart Chile has facilitated the opening of 14 collection centers across seven regions to encourage and simplify the process for those wishing to contribute to the recovery efforts.
