If you’ve been keeping up with current events, you are likely no stranger to how our planet is teetering on the brink of danger. Our activities are contributing to escalating environmental damage, and threats of deforestation, air pollution, depletion of natural resources and climate change are looming. What’s more, research has revealed that many planetary safety and justice indicators are showing alarming signs. The consequences of our dirty deeds are catching up to us—we are now facing growing crises in water availability, nutrient loading, ecosystem maintenance and aerosol pollution.

The plan, of course, is to take swift action, and this is where clean technology comes into play. Cleantech is often associated with “green technology” or “environmental technology”. It encompasses innovative technologies dedicated to cleaning up the mess left behind by “dirty” tech like coal, oil, mining, transportation and manufacturing. Many industries, like agriculture, transportation, construction and waste management, are increasingly adopting cleantech solutions, such as renewable energy, water purification and conservation, electric vehicles, biofuels and eco-friendly alternatives to existing solutions.

Li-Cycle: Revolutionizing battery recycling

Established in 2016, Toronto-based Li-Cycle is a leading cleantech startup specializing in advanced lithium-ion battery recycling solutions. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are in high demand due to their high energy capacity and longevity. However, their production demands scarce resources and contributes to environmental harm through pollution and exploitation in resource-rich yet unstable regions. 

Li-Cycle’s two-step method—namely “Spoke” and “Hub” technologies—recycles various LIB materials, from manufacturing leftovers to end-of-life batteries. With the Spoke technology, the collected batteries and production rejects are separated into plastics, copper/aluminum and a “black mass” substance containing valuable metals like lithium, nickel and cobalt. Then, these battery-grade metals will then be extracted at Li-Cycle’s Hub facilities and used for producing new batteries. Remarkably, the process reclaims up to 95 percent of the battery materials. 

Employing an energy-efficient, heat-free wet-chemistry process, Li-Cycle also minimizes emissions and wastewater, unlike high-temperature smelting methods. Its first Hub facility in Rochester, New York, is set to commence operations by late 2023, processing up to 35,000 tonnes of black mass annually.

Otovo: Simplifying solar energy adoption

Otovo, headquartered in Oslo, operates an online platform connecting homeowners with solar and battery installation services. Available in 13 European countries, Otovo uses satellite data and mapping information to calculate a roof’s sunlight exposure, the corresponding energy production and suitable rooftop solar product specifications. Then, it matches customers with the most appropriate installer at the best price through an automated bidding system.

For many customers, the initial cost of installing solar panels can be a financial strain. Otovo addresses this challenge by offering a rental service for solar panels and inverters. Customers pay a fixed monthly fee instead of a substantial upfront investment, covering all repairs and maintenance for a hassle-free experience. In addition, Otovo provides batteries with their solar panel systems for storing extra solar power for nighttime use. 

Carbon Upcycling Technologies: Transforming construction materials

Building materials, especially concrete, play a substantial role in greenhouse gas emissions, a major contributor to global warming. Cement, a primary ingredient in concrete, is responsible for substantial carbon dioxide emissions—approximately 8 percent—thus making it among the most carbon-intensive industries globally. To put it simply, producing 1,000 kilograms of cement results in releasing more than 900 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Carbon Upcycling Technologies Inc. (“Carbon Upcycling”) offers an innovative solution for reducing the carbon footprint of cement and concrete. The Canadian company delivers decarbonization solutions in challenging industrial sectors like cement, steel and mining. Its patented technology captures carbon dioxide from industrial emissions, incorporates it into waste materials to substitute cement (carbon dioxide removal) and reduces the cement needed in concrete (carbon dioxide avoidance). 

Carbon Upcycling is partnering with industry leaders CRH Ventures and CEMEX to implement its initial large-scale projects, aiming to reduce industrial carbon footprints, repurpose landfill materials and promote a circular economy.

The evolving significance of the cleantech sector

As awareness grows, governments, businesses and investors are recognizing the importance of sustainable technologies and committing substantial resources to support their development. Since 2015, global investments in energy transition technologies have nearly tripled, surpassing US$1 trillion for the first time in 2022. Such encouraging statistics underscore the understanding of the necessity of transitioning to clean and renewable energy sources.
