PetSmart’s latest leap in sustainability ensures your pets’ carbon pawprint is as small as their real ones.

PetSmart, a provider of pet products and services, is actively expanding its selection of sustainable products in response to a growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly options. A diverse range of eco-friendly products

PetSmart’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its enhanced product assortment, which now includes:

  • West Paw: This Certified B Corporation manufactures durable dog toys and pet products that prioritize sustainability through the use of eco-friendly materials and processes.
  • PetPlate: Known for its veterinarian-designed recipes, PetPlate provides frozen, gently cooked meals made from high-quality, human-grade ingredients, offering healthier alternatives to traditional pet food. 
  • Only Natural Pet: As a subsidiary of PetSmart and a Certified B Corporation, Only Natural Pet offers a range of products made from natural, high-quality ingredients that are responsibly sourced.

Recycling and waste reduction initiatives

PetSmart is actively addressing the end-of-life for pet products with new recycling initiatives aimed at waste reduction. The company has joined the West Paw Loop® Takeback Program to become the first national retailer to collect used West Paw dog toys at over 75 store locations. The toys are then recycled into new products, demonstrating a sustainable, closed-loop process.

In addition to the toy takeback program, PetSmart has partnered with TerraCycle to launch a pet food bag takeback initiative starting this summer. Targus has launched a new line of eco-friendly products and improved its sustainability rating according to EcoVadis.

Targus, a leading brand in laptop cases and mobile computing accessories, recently announced its continued commitment to sustainability with the introduction of new eco-friendly products. Utilizing its proprietary EcoSmart® technology, which transforms plastic water bottles into fabric, Targus has expanded its product line. 

The latest addition includes the EcoSmart Coastline Collection, featuring a backpack and briefcase made from certified ocean-bound plastic. This move builds on Targus’s history of using recycled materials in laptop bags since 2008.

In 2024, the Targus team accumulated 12.8 million steps, resulting in the planting of 1,159 trees. These trees are projected to capture approximately 395.73 tons of CO2 by 2050—equivalent to offsetting the emissions from 112,278 quarter-pound cheeseburgers. Art and exhibition highlights across LVMH brands

LVMH’s luxury houses are utilizing their iconic Paris venues to showcase exhibitions that blend art with the athletic spirit. Berluti will collaborate with artist Mathieu Forget, who is known for his dynamic art depicting movement and levitation, to present “L’Élégance française en mouvement.” This exhibition, showcasing photographs that capture Olympic sports in motion, will be held at 9 Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré from June 1 to September 9, 2024.

Following this, Dior will present a photography exhibition at their Avenue Montaigne store, starting June 19, 2024. The exhibition will feature the Maison’s sports ambassadors and explore themes of audacity and excellence through the intersection of high fashion and peak athletic performance. 

Guerlain at 68 Avenue des Champs-Élysées will honor the symbolic and historic significance of gold in Olympic achievements through the “OR NORME” (“Extraordinary Gold”) exhibition, featuring works from 16 artists, from June 6 to September 12, 2024.

Louis Vuitton’s dual exhibitions celebrating sports

Louis Vuitton is preparing two separate exhibitions. The first, “LV DREAM”, opens on June 18 at 26 Quai de la Mégisserie and runs until December 31, 2024. It will highlight the Maison’s historic and contemporary artistic collaborations influenced by sports. 

The second exhibition, “La Malle Courrier”, will be hosted at the Vuitton Family Home in Asnières from April 2 to December 31, 2024. It will showcase the Maison’s craftsmanship through sports-inspired trunks and artifacts to highlight the legacy of sports within the brand.

La Samaritaine’s trio of exhibitions

La Samaritaine is set to host three diverse exhibitions, each celebrating different aspects of sports culture from April 30 to September 8, 2024. The exhibition “Samaritaine: Paris se prend au jeu” (“Paris joins the game”) explores the department store’s longstanding engagement with sports, dating back to its founding of the first Union Sportive sporting club in 1895. This display captures the store’s historical connection to athletic activities.

“Les Légendes Mondiales du sport” (“Global sporting legends”) offers a retrospective on major sporting events over the past century, showcasing a collection of memorable objects associated with the world’s most renowned athletes. These items, borrowed from the private collection of Terence Darrigade, trace significant moments in sports history.

Meanwhile, “Domestic Games, les femmes à l’épreuve” (“Domestic Games, women take the lead”) features installations by Camille Menard and Agnst Design that critically examine the role of sports in everyday life and the representation of women in sports internationally. This exhibition aims to highlight and challenge traditional views on gender in the sporting world.

Additionally, in collaboration with Fisheye magazine, La Samaritaine presents a photographic exhibition by Enzo Lefort, an ambassador for Louis Vuitton and LVMH. Lefort, a member of the French foil fencing team, provides a unique perspective on the intense world of competitive sports through his lens.

Fondation Louis Vuitton’s artistic interpretation of sports

The Fondation Louis Vuitton will host the “La Collection, Rendez-vous avec le sport” (“The Collection, Rendez-vous with sport”) exhibition from May 7 to September 9, 2024. This exhibit coincides with the passage of the Olympic flame through Paris and features a selection of works from the Foundation’s collection.  Displayed on the second level of the building, the collection presents a diverse and poetic interpretation of sports, showcasing pieces by both French and international artists including Abraham Poincheval, Andreas Gursky, Roman Signer, Omar Victor Diop and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

A highlight of the exhibition is the extended loan of “Olympic Rings”, a collaborative painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. In collaboration with Amazon, NVIDIA is contributing US$25 million to bring state-of-the-art technologies to the University of Washington and the University of Tsukuba. This investment is part of NVIDIA’s broader initiative to support educational institutions worldwide, preparing students for crucial roles in AI through access to high-performance computing resources.

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential. “This collaboration between the University of Washington, University of Tsukuba, Amazon and NVIDIA will help provide the research and workforce training for our regions’ tech sectors to keep up with the profound impacts AI is having across every sector of our economy,” he remarked.

Supporting academia and technological advancement

In a recent announcement, Samsung introduced plans to significantly expand the language options available for its Galaxy AI, enhancing accessibility for users worldwide. This expansion includes the addition of three new languages—Arabic, Indonesian and Russian—and three new dialects—Australian English, Cantonese and Canadian French, building on the existing 13 languages currently supported.

PolyU’s GeoAI research aims to develop solutions for transportation, urban safety and environmental challenges.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is leveraging geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) to tackle a range of environmental and social challenges worldwide. Through its innovative application in various sectors such as transportation, urban safety, and climate change, PolyU aims to lead in transforming how societies manage and adapt to these issues.

Prof. Qihao Weng, Chair Professor of Geomatics and Artificial Intelligence at PolyU, has founded the Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Geomatics (RCAIG) with the vision of making it a global research and development hub for GeoAI. Professor Weng, a recent recipient of the 2024 American Association of Geographers (AAG) Wilbanks Prize and the AAG Remote Sensing Specialty Group Lifetime Achievement Honor Award, is recognized for his transformative research in geography.

Directions and innovations of RCAIG

The research directions of RCAIG include studying human-environment interactions during urbanization and creating data products for global urban areas using Earth Observations (EO). These efforts are geared towards providing advanced urban data services and enhancing our understanding of environmental and societal changes.

“Earth observation is important as a guiding compass for understanding changes in the environment and society. Our research focuses on diverse fields including geospatial big data and AI, remote sensing, ground-based sensors, navigation and positioning, surveying and geodesy, laser scanning and photogrammetry. These technologies play a crucial role in addressing and resolving key environmental and social challenges,” said Prof. Weng.

GeoAI applications in building and environmental monitoring

GeoAI technology at PolyU has significantly advanced building monitoring by enabling automatic learning to identify patterns in building features, such as color and shape. This technology is crucial for assessing disaster damage, retrieving building heights, identifying structural changes and estimating energy consumption. 

Additionally, a research team led by Ms. Wanru, an RCAIG doctoral research assistant, has created a new way to look at how cities grow. They have built a model that uses impervious surface area-based urban cellular automata (CA) to simulate changes in urban areas, providing valuable insights for sustainable development.

The team has shared their work in an article called “Modeling gridded urban fractional change using the temporal context information in the urban cellular automata model”, which was published in the academic journal Cities

Advancing smart traffic management

RCAIG is also working in the realm of smart traffic management. To enhance the efficiency of ride-hailing services, a research team led by RCAIG researcher Ms. Mingyue Xu has introduced a multi-agent order matching and vehicle repositioning system using multi-agent deep reinforcement learning. This technology can provide effective solutions to long-term spatio-temporal planning problems in transportation.

The system addresses two important issues in the ride-hailing industry: matching ride orders with available vehicles more efficiently and sending idle cars to regions that will soon experience high demands. It promises to reduce passenger rejection rates and minimize driver idle times.

This research was reported in the paper “Multi-agent reinforcement learning to unify order-matching and vehicle-repositioning in ride-hailing services”, which was published in the journal International Journal of Geographical Information Science

Strengthening a historic alliance

The partnership builds upon the longstanding alliance between Citrix, a business unit of Cloud Software Group, and Microsoft, making Citrix the preferred solution for Enterprise Desktop as a Service on Microsoft Global Azure for joint Azure customers. Together, they will offer customer support, tailored solutions and expert guidance to facilitate the cloud adoption journey.

Citrix will also prioritize Microsoft Azure as its primary cloud solution, enhancing the Citrix platform with Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 and offering modern procurement through the Azure Marketplace.

Miika Nikinmaa, Biomaterial Solutions Lead at VTT, highlights the process’s efficiency and its potential to revolutionize production by preserving fiber properties for enhanced material strength. 

“Once the process is optimized, we expect to be competitive even with extrusion technologies. In a previously published paper, we estimated that production costs would be 26% lower than with conventional technologies, but these figures will become more accurate as development continues,” Nikinmaa remarked.

This biocomposite material boasts impressive mechanical strength and can be 3D shaped into complex designs, ideal for crafting lightweight yet sturdy structures. Its thermoplastic nature allows easy manipulation with standard woodworking tools, presenting a versatile and practical option for furniture manufacturing.

Design and environmental impact

ISKU’s design for the chair features a contemporary look that accentuates the biocomposite’s natural texture and hue. “Our aim isn’t merely to replicate existing products using new materials, but to pioneer innovative solutions that address unique customer needs previously unmet on the market,” said Mikko Porter, Head of Lean Six Sigma at ISKU. The chair’s design is not only stylish but also durable, lightweight, and recyclable, aligning with environmental sustainability goals by minimizing furniture waste.

Broadening horizons in the biocomposites market

Representing a significant breakthrough in the furniture industry, the biocomposites market is projected to reach US$7.6 billion, with a steady growth rate of 7.6% annually from 2023 to 2027, according to BCC Research in 2022. 

This material offers versatility in manufacturing, allowing for diverse product forms and combinations with other materials. Beyond furniture, the biocomposite has potential applications in packaging, consumer goods and construction. VTT is dedicated to forming partnerships to commercialize this technology and bring biocomposite products to the consumer market in the foreseeable future.
