This collaboration combines Microsoft Azure’s capabilities with NVIDIA’s AI technology to accelerate clinical research.
Microsoft Corp. has announced a collaboration with NVIDIA aimed at leveraging advanced cloud technology, generative AI and accelerated computing to advance healthcare and life sciences. The partnership combines Microsoft Azure’s global scale, security and computing capabilities with NVIDIA DGX Cloud and the NVIDIA Clara suite to accelerate research and improve patient care in these sectors.
The collaboration focuses on leveraging the strengths of both companies to speed up clinical research, improve drug discovery processes and refine diagnostic technologies through medical imaging. It seeks to make precision medicine more accessible, utilizing the cloud and AI to offer real-time, data-driven insights that can significantly impact patient outcomes.
Peter Durlach, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Health & Life Sciences, emphasized the collaboration’s goal to empower the healthcare and life sciences industry with Azure and generative AI. “Through this collaboration, we aim to help the industry unlock breakthroughs in healthcare, making care more precise, accessible and effective to deliver a meaningful difference in the lives of patients globally,” Durlach remarked.
Echoing this sentiment, Kimberly Powell, NVIDIA’s Vice President of Healthcare, noted the transformative potential of AI, cloud computing and healthcare coming together. “Our collaboration with Microsoft will help unlock new possibilities and drive meaningful impact for patients worldwide,” Powell added.
Accelerating drug discovery and enhancing patient care
The collaboration introduces NVIDIA BioNeMo on Azure, aiming to streamline AI model development for drug discovery. This platform is designed to facilitate the rapid identification of drug candidates, promising quicker access to therapies.
In medical imaging, the partnership leverages Azure, NVIDIA MONAI and the Nuance Precision Imaging Network to improve the development, deployment and evaluation of AI diagnostic technologies. This effort is part of a broader strategy to advance clinical research and care delivery.
Collaborative efforts in medical imaging and genomics analysis
The initiative also includes a collaboration with Flywheel and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, utilizing AI to revolutionize medical imaging research. “Through this initiative, we’re able to harness advanced methods and take advantage of Flywheel and NVIDIA’s platforms and tools to scale our data curation process, allowing us to spend more time on research projects and training AI models,” explained John Garrett, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Radiology and Medical Physics at UW–Madison.
Furthermore, the partnership extends to genomics analysis, with SOPHiA GENETICS utilizing Azure and NVIDIA Parabricks to develop a comprehensive whole-genome analytical solution. This streamlined, scalable solution will enable healthcare institutions to analyze genomic data efficiently and provide actionable insights for cancer treatment and rare inherited genetic disorders. Abhimanyu Verma, CTO of SOPHiA GENETICS, described the collaboration as an opportunity to scale top analytical performance in genomics, benefiting patients with cancer and rare genetic disorders.
Democratizing AI in healthcare
Microsoft’s collaboration with NVIDIA also extends to democratizing AI for healthcare professionals through Azure AI. This initiative aims to make a suite of NVIDIA healthcare microservices available on Azure AI, allowing researchers, clinicians and developers to explore and deploy state-of-the-art models in the Azure AI Model Catalog.
