The content is artificial but the creativity is real!
Generative AI or simply GenAI is a type of AI that can create new content that mimics human-like creativity. This rapidly evolving technology is slowly disrupting the film and content creation landscape. GenAI can leverage advanced machine learning techniques and algorithms to assist filmmaking —from script writing to VFX! However, similar to other industries, AI is met with concerns in the entertainment industry. There are concerns about its impact on jobs and replacing human talent.
The entertainment industry can witness a revolution in the way we consume media once there is widespread adoption of GenAI. Read on to learn more about the future of entertainment and gain valuable insights from the industry leaders!
Implementation of AI in entertainment
With the advent of AI, its adoption is slowly being spread to different industries, including the much-famed entertainment industry. Various AI-powered scriptwriting and storytelling tools such as InVideo and ShortlyAI, can be utilized to analyze scripts and predict their success rate. The tedious and time-consuming process of scriptwriting can be made easy with these tools. They can assist the writer in speeding up the rough drafts or refining them with new perspectives—helping the writer get over writer’s block.
In 2023, Joe Russo, co-director of blockbuster movies such as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, predicted that AI would be able to create personalized movies based on your suggestions and prompts in two years. “Potentially, what you could do with (AI) is use it to engineer storytelling and change storytelling,” Russo added. We can craft personalized films and content that can cater to our preferences. In the future, we can see Sylvester Stallone fighting Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Rocky movies, all thanks to GenAI.
In August 2023, Kwebblekop, a content creator and YouTuber boasting over 15 million subscribers, created an AI version of himself for his videos. Most of his videos feature his animated or realistic AI version, commenting on games. This received massive backlash from the YouTube community for the lack of authenticity and human touch while also lacking substance. He credited burnout as a major factor behind his resort to AI for content creation. Kwebblekop wanted to maintain the channel’s relevance without affecting his mental health.
GenAI can be a supplementary tool to save time and cost while maximizing efficiency and productivity in the time-consuming filmmaking process. With AI personalization, you can cater to a wider audience, as Netflix does in its exclusive trailers. Automating these tasks can allow filmmakers to focus on other important aspects. AI can transform the entertainment industry with tools that can minimize logistical problems such as budget or manpower while enhancing artistic vision.
Challenges in the adoption of GenAI
Along with various advantages to the adoption of GenAI in the entertainment industry, it presents various challenges that need to be addressed for effective and responsible usage. Below are a few challenges that need to be addressed.
- Ethical considerations – GenAI can potentially be used to generate harmful or offensive content, posing a major ethical threat. Deepfakes can be created to tarnish reputation or to spread misinformation about certain individuals or situations.
- Data privacy issues – Using personal data in training AI models can backfire in case of a data breach, leading to the violation of data protection laws.
- Industrial resistance – The film industry is firm in its stance against AI. The WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) proposed various restrictions on the application of AI in scriptwriting, which safeguards the writers from exploitation.
The future of GenAI in entertainment
Various GenAI and tech companies are trying to make their mark on the film and entertainment industry by streamlining productivity and being efficient. By 2033, the global GenAI market size is estimated to be worth around US$255.8 Billion from US$13.5 Billion in 2023; growing with an astonishing 34.2% CAGR.
Recently, tech giant Meta has announced their new AI model, Movie Gen that can create videos and audio from text prompts and edit existing videos. Microsoft is also a part of the GenAI revolution with Clipchamp, an AI-powered video editor. Such revolutionary advancements can increase awareness and the usage of GenAI.
These advancements, however, are met with challenges that must be navigated to successfully adopt this technology. Major attention has to be paid to the critique of GenAI, addressing the issues of human replacement and data privacy. By addressing these crucial problems, you might soon witness a film featuring AI in the credits at a theatre near you.
