As per Netflix founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings<\/a>\u2019s book No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention<\/em>, the idea for the unlimited vacation policy came from a conversation with an employee. The employee asked why the company was tracking days of vacation per year when they were already working online some weekends and taking afternoons off for personal time. Hastings agreed with the employee’s point of view, and thus the unlimited vacation policy was implemented. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tech giant Microsoft is offering<\/a> its U.S. employees an unlimited vacation policy called \u201cDiscretionary Time Off\u201d, eliminating the need to accrue leaves. In January 2023, Microsoft’s Chief People Officer Kathleen Hogan announced an update to the company’s vacation policy through a memo to employees. Verge<\/a> reports that the company is modernizing its policy to make it more flexible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new policy is accompanied<\/a> by other benefits, including ten paid corporate holidays, leave of absence, sick and mental health time off and time off for jury duty or bereavement. This provides a comprehensive time-off package for employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Microsoft will also make a one-time payout in April to employees who have unused vacation days. The unique benefit gives employees the flexibility to choose when and how to use their vacation time and provides them with financial compensation for unused time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LinkedIn<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft-owned social network LinkedIn offers<\/a> unlimited paid time off (PTO) and 17 paid holidays per year as part of its comprehensive benefits package. The company also has a tradition of providing \u201cInDays\u201d to its employees, where employees can work on personal projects unrelated to their daily work one day a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By giving employees time each month to work on personal projects, LinkedIn shows that it values their overall happiness and encourages them to follow their interests outside of work. The company also closes its doors from Christmas to New Year’s<\/a>, giving employees a prolonged break for relaxation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evernote<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Popular note-taking platform Evernote offers<\/a> unlimited vacation days and even provides a US$1,000 stipend to encourage employees to take a full week off. Phil Libin, the former CEO of Evernote believes<\/a> that the policy of unlimited vacations will lead to increased productivity. He feels that employees should reward themselves with a vacation after a job well done and that they are mature enough to take time off when they need it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, he was concerned that employees would feel less inclined to take advantage of the unlimited vacation policy and take less time off. \u201cI don\u2019t want people not to take any vacation because that\u2019s just bad for them, and it\u2019s bad for me. So we started rewarding people for taking at least a week at a time on a real trip by giving them $1,000 spending money,\u201d explains Libin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
